Time-lapse is the photographic technique of taking a sequence of frames at set intervals to record changes. These changes generally take place slowly over time. When the frames are shown at normal speed, or in quick succession, the action seems much faster. [1] Being a photographer, filming may not always come easily; this is why I chose to capture my video using the photographic technique of time-lapse.Photo_ideas_time_lapse_photography_featured

While capturing the sequence of images that composed my video, I faced a plethora of ups and downs. The most consistent struggle I had to overcome was photographing the scene at consistent intervals. (See .gif to the right for an example of consistent use of intervals to create a smooth effect) If the intervals between each photograph weren’t consistent it created a chopping effect in the video. This branched into other problems that I had to plan out in detail, for giphyexample, timing. The timing had to be pre-planned, so I could capture the sun setting over the city.

Another challenge was making sure that I had enough memory storage to capture all the images. Composing a time-lapse video requires a large sequence of correctly timed images. Thus, I was equipped with four memory cards.

Moreover, the most important thing to remember about the camera when doing a time-lapse is the settings. The exposure must change fluently with the change of the scene if the sun is setting or rising. Also if things like cars are being captured the exposure needs to allow for the vehicle to be seen, but not to wash out the car lights or create grain in the images.

When the above elements have been achieved the photographer is rewarded with a sequence of images that compose an intriguing video. The speedup feeling a time-lapse creates keeps viewers engaged, which I used to my advantage. Through my video I wanted to convey the movement of the nightlife. The commotion of living in a city and the beauty of the city and car lights combined. I wanted viewers to see through my eyes, and experience what I see. In conclusion, conquering the photographic technique of time-lapse is a rewarding experience that I hope to experience again.
